happy birthday mum!

today is my mum's birthday!
i adore this picture (and the entire series) taken on my wedding day...
yes, that is me, doing my mum's hair-
i've had a number of people think that's nuts (!)
but, really...
i love doing my mum's hair
even in my wedding day.

i play it off like it's a pain,
but really
i love those 10-15 minutes when we can chat
and i am making her feel beautiful
the way i see her.

especially on my wedding day...

happy birthday merm!

(our FAVORITE lunch/ice cream place doesn't open for the season this year until tomorrow, so WE are celebrating then... with a chocolate cone:)

from one gleek to another

helloooo mr. schuester!
(just thought i'd share)

happy tuesday!

sewing sentiments

i've been spending an hour or so each evening upstairs in my little home studio
quilting my far far away quilt

so, seeing this adorable new piece from alyssa nassner
made me smile

nothing more annoying than coming out of a sewing trance to find stitch-less rows!

brimfield love

last thursday my dad and i took a little road trip to brimfield...
we met up with my friend amanda
and set out to scour the fields

much to see

i tried
but couldn't
leave without this bar cart

i have a thing for anything teak and mid-century.
plus, i got it for a steal

we left over-stimulated, with swollen feet and satisfied until september
(i can't do that july show in full-summer heat)

prom season

if you're deep into spring cleaning and switching over your closet
and happen upon any pretty dresses, bridesmaid's gowns or other prom-wear (accessories too!)
so a financially disadvantaged teen can feel like a princess
on prom night.

i just can't stop looking at this photo...
children dancing.
in the simplest things they find such joy.

a good way to start the day.

happy mother's day

to my mum...

thank you for all that you do
and all that you are for me.
i love you.

and to all the other mammas, moms-to-be, caretakers and friends...
i think sandra bullock said it best in her oscar acceptance speech:

"...I would like to thank what this film is about for me which are the moms that take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from. Those moms and parents never get thanked. I, in particular, failed to thank one. So… if I can take this moment to thank Helga B. for not letting me ride in cars with boys until I was 18 because she was right. I would’ve done what she said I was gonna do. For making me practice every day when I got home. Piano, ballet, whatever it is I wanted to be. She said to be an artist, you had to practice every day, and for reminding her daughters that there’s no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love. So, to that trailblazer, who allowed me to have that."

(we haven't discussed, but i think she ROCKS more than ever)

staircase love

ok, so i'm the first to admit that i haven't always been a fan.
for a while there, amy butler bored and annoyed me
(most of it)
especially the navy blue.

i hadn't found a place to use any of it in our house yet...
so when i heard that graham + brown is producing the wallpaper (!!!)
my wheels started turning...

thinking maybe for the risers on our staircase?
reid likes the idea in general- he even pointed out a photo in last month's this old house...

love either of these:

hopefully they're not too girly?

a little more inspiration...

what's next for rikshaw?

head over to the rikshaw design blog today
to check out my suggestions
for where i'd love love love to see those gorgeous block-printed textiles next!

thanks to catherine for asking me to participate!

eco-chic agua

i've had lifefactory's glass baby bottles bookmarked in my "someday" file for a while now
but they've just added something that i could certainly use now...
glass water bottles for the grownup crowd!

i do love my klean kanteen, but seeing how much is left in the bottle would be nice too...

sewing class: project #5

with mother's day fast approaching,
i wanted to get in a project the girls could proudly give to their mammas

in just two sessions...

a summer tunic!
from this pattern (written for use with knits, but will work fine for a woven)

finishing touches.

lovies are next... any pattern suggestions?

where i've been

i need to apologize
for my lack of posting and general

i was feeling a bit
burnt out

a trip to
charlottesville va
to visit some dear, dear freinds

was perfection.
can you get enough of my sleeping quarters?!?!
the barn.
in all it's glory.

falling asleep to the sound of peepers
dozing off in cozy, wrinkly linen sheets
warm days and cool nights...

i'm back and quite refreshed.

so, fun stuff to come... shopping guides, guest posts, projects, house before + afters...
Happy May!
